What should you expect in a Yoga class?

Yoga is not just about stretching our bodies and breathing in special ways, yoga also teaches us to pay attention to those little things that make life less stressful and more meaningful. A yoga class has a different atmosphere than an aerobics class or other fitness class. Here are a few things to keep in mind to get the most out of your yoga experience.

Arrive on time (which means 5 - 10 minutes early) and then forget about the time, and all your daily worries, for the duration of the class.

Wear the right clothing. That doesn't mean it has to be "fashionable", but comfort is a must and somewhat form fitting so the instructor can see your body alignment. You will also want to remove any large jewelry. And, of course, you won't need shoes or socks.

If you must leave early (or arrive late), do so quietly and with as little disruption as possible.

After class, give yourself a moment or two of "quiet time" to digest what took place.

Respect your mat like you would a good friend…roll it up tightly and neatly and keep it clean. Mats can be washed with diluted, mild soap - just be sure to rinse it thoroughly so it does not become slippery.

Get to know your own body - its strengths and its limitations. Learn to use props on poses that you have difficulty with. As your body becomes stronger and more flexible you will use the prop less.

Leave your ego at the door! Don't compare yourself to anyone else, don't "go for it" if your body isn't quite ready - learn to play your own "edge". If you find yourself daydreaming during class, try to focus on what the teacher is saying and concentrate on staying in the present moment. This is a continuous process!

Don't be afraid to ask. There's lots to know about yoga - and it's fascinating! When you have questions about a certain pose, breathing technique or yoga principle try to make time before or after class. During class, keep your questions short so you can stay within your "zone". Your instructor will be happy to help.
