What is Yoga?

YOGA is a complete system of life - one of the oldest systems of personal development in the world. Yoga originated in India thousands of years ago; it is thought to have been practiced as early as 4,000 BC. Ancient yogis developed a profound understanding of the functions of the body and the interrelations of the body and the mind. They formulated a unique method of maintaining physical health while also ensuring peace of mind.

YOGA has evolved over the years, but the essence of the practice remains the same - to develop a fit and supple body while also learning to relax and still the mind. At first glance, yoga may seem like little more than a series of strange physical postures, but anyone who continues with regular practice may soon become aware of subtle changes in their approach to life. As you practice stretching and relaxing the body and stilling the mind, you begin to get a glimpse of the inner peace that yogis believe is the true nature of the human race.

A true YOGA practice touches all aspects of life. In addition to the physical postures, or asanas, yoga also includes specific breathing exercises that help reduce stress and anxiety; discussions on how to develop healthy eating habits (many yogis are vegetarian); and ideas on how to take better care of our earth and environment. Yogis also practice meditation which can be thought of as simply sitting quietly and stilling the constant "chatter" of the mind.

Through the practice of YOGA, you not only gain greater physical stamina and flexibility, but you learn to take responsibility for your own thoughts, emotions, and health. This, in turn, can help to eliminate the limits we place on ourselves and gives us greater happiness, peace, and satisfaction with life.
